Gastric Sleeve Surgery is a Transformative Weight Loss Procedure
Discover how it can give you back your health and confidence.
Many patients choose gastric sleeve surgery because it can support meaningful weight loss and lasting improvements in health, confidence, and overall quality of life when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.
Whether you’re beginning to explore bariatric surgery or actively considering treatment, this guide explains how gastric sleeve surgery works, who may be a candidate, what recovery typically involves, and the long-term support available through the 360 Sleeve aftercare program.
What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), is one of the most commonly performed bariatric surgery procedures worldwide. The procedure is designed to help eligible patients achieve significant weight loss by reducing stomach size and supporting long-term lifestyle changes.
Unlike gastric bypass surgery, gastric sleeve surgery does not reroute the intestines. Food continues to follow its normal digestive pathway while the smaller stomach helps patients feel satisfied with less food.
Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy or VSGย
During gastric sleeve surgery, approximately 80% of the stomach is removed to create a smaller, sleeve-shaped stomach. This reduces the amount of food that can be comfortably consumed at one time while also affecting hunger-related hormones such as ghrelin.
Because digestion continues through its normal pathway, many patients appreciate the procedure’s straightforward anatomy and structured long-term aftercare approach.
Why Patients Consider Gastric Sleeve Surgery
Patients may explore gastric sleeve surgery when traditional weight loss methods such as diet, exercise, and medically supervised weight management programs have not produced sustainable results.
Potential benefits may include:
- Significant long-term weight loss for eligible patients
- Reduced hunger and improved portion control
- No intestinal rerouting
- A well-established bariatric procedure with extensive clinical research
- Comprehensive aftercare and ongoing support through the 360 Sleeve program

How Gastric Sleeve Surgery Supports Long-Term Weight Loss
The procedure also affects hunger-related hormones, including ghrelin, which may help reduce appetite and support long-term weight management. Combined with ongoing dietary guidance, physical activity, and follow-up care, these changes can help patients build healthier habits over time.
Key Factors That Support Long-Term Success
Patients may explore gastric sleeve surgery when traditional weight loss methods such as diet, exercise, and medically supervised weight management programs have not produced sustainable results.
Smaller Portion Sizes The newly created sleeve-shaped stomach holds significantly less food than before surgery. As a result, many patients feel full sooner and are able to better manage portion sizes. Reduced Hunger Signals A portion of the stomach responsible for producing much of the hormone ghrelin is removed during surgery. Ghrelin helps regulate hunger and appetite. As a result, gastric sleeve surgery may affect hunger-related signals, which can help support portion control and long-term weight management when combined with healthy lifestyle changes and ongoing follow-up care. Ongoing Lifestyle Changes Gastric sleeve surgery is a tool, not a standalone solution. Long-term success depends on healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, and ongoing support from your healthcare team.Considering Bariatric Surgery?
Our team evaluates each patient individually to determine whether gastric sleeve surgery or another bariatric procedure may be appropriate based on their health history and treatment goals.

BENEFITS
Feel Full Sooner. Crave Less
This procedure is one of the world’s leading weight loss solutions. Learn how it works, how it supports long-term weight loss, and how it can improve your overall health and quality of life
1. Your Stomach Holds Less Food:
The procedure works by removing a significant portion of your stomach โ with minimum effect on the digestive process. The now-reduced stomach area then resembles a sleeve, thus the name of the surgery.2. You Donโt Crave Food as Much
Secondly, the surgery also limits the amount of food that you crave. This is because your stomach is reduced in size now, and you feel satisfied with smaller amounts of food. The science behind your food cravings has to do with a โhunger hormoneโ your stomach produces called ghrelin, which sends signals to your brain causing cravings and hunger. This surgery actually removes the portion of the stomach that produces the most of this hunger hormone. This means youโll be satisfied with less food and will be able to wait longer between meals before you have the urge to eat again. How Gastric Sleeve Surgery is Performed
A unique dual-surgeon approach in our state-of-the-art clinic.
Step One:
The patient is given general anesthesia to ensure they are asleep and pain-free during the procedure.
Step Two:
The surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope (a small camera) along with other surgical instruments through these incisions.
Step Three:
Next, our surgeons use the video feed to remove a portion of the stomach and staple the remainder of the stomach into a sleeve shape. To accomplish this with precision, we use a Smart Stapling system, which is a device that measures the thickness of the tissue and simultaneously separates, cuts, and staples with three lines of interlaced titanium staples. This creates a remarkably strong, leakproof hold. Plus, the titanium staples are MRI safe.
Step Four:
Finally, the excised portion of the stomach along with the camera and instruments are removed, and the incisions in the abdomen are sutured. The entire surgery takes about 1.5 hours to perform, and the recovery period is typically just a few hours. Most patients go home the same day.

During the early recovery period, patients gradually progress through a structured nutrition plan while continuing light daily activity. Follow-up guidance from the 360 Sleeve team helps ensure recovery stays on track.
4. Weeks 3 to 6

OHIP typically covers gastric bypass surgery and a small percentage ofย bariatric surgeries.
Meeting OHIP criteria for gastric sleeve can be very challenging due to their strict requirements.

This is why many people choose 360 Sleeve. As a private clinic, we do not accept OHIP referrals, which allows us to provide gastric sleeve surgery to patients who don’t meet the stringent OHIP requirements.
Additionally, we can expedite the process, helping you avoid long provincial wait times.
At 360 Sleeve, we offer top-quality care with a comprehensive 6-year aftercare program.
The entire procedure takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete, during which the patient is asleep.’
Gastric sleeve surgery is normally a same-day procedure, and youโll be sent home when our team determines that youโve reached the criteria for discharge.
We recommend taking between 1-3 weeks off work, depending on your job.
Yes, you will have small scars after gastric sleeve surgery because it involves making a few small incisions in your abdomen. These scars are usually minimal and fade over time.
After gastric sleeve surgery, you’ll need to eat smaller portions and follow a special diet initially. Over time, you can eat a variety of foods, but in smaller quantities than before.
With Gastric sleeve surgery, patients can lose between 60-70% of their excess body weight.ย
The other benefits include reducing or resolving many obesity-related diseases such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and more.
Yes, itโs safe to get pregnant following gastric sleeve once your weight stabilizes.ย
Itโs recommended that pregnancy be avoided during the first 12-18 months following surgery due to the significant weight loss and metabolic changes that will be occurring.
