The exact amount of weight you can lose with gastric sleeve depends on many factors. Your age, starting weight and general health can all influence how much you’ll lose after gastric sleeve surgery. With gastric sleeve, you can lose 60-70% of your excess weight; the calculation used to estimate how much excess weight you’ll lose is referred to as your expected weight loss. But how exactly is this calculation determined?
What You’ll Need to Determine Expected Weight Loss
To get an idea of just how much weight you may expect to lose post-op, you’ll need to first calculate your ideal body weight, as well as your excess weight. These are the two numbers that’ll help to determine your potential weight loss. This is due to the fact that every sleeve patient is different and will lose a different amount of weight. For example, someone that is 6’2” and weighs 400 lbs will lose a different amount of weight compared to someone who weighs 220 lbs and stands at 5’4”. However, both of these patients will likely lose a similar percent of their excess weight. Curious to learn more? Book your complimentary consultation with our surgical team.
Ideal Body Weight
The first number you’ll need to figure out is your ideal body weight. Ideal Body Weight can be calculated using a few different equations.
For men, it is calculated using: 50.0 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.
For women, it is calculated using: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.
Excess Weight
Next, you will need to determine your excess weight. Excess Weight can be calculated by subtracting your ideal weight from your current weight.
Current Weight – Ideal Weight = Excess Weight.
Calculating Expected Weight Loss
The final step to calculate your potential weight loss after gastric sleeve is by using the excess weight you have just determined in one last equation:
Excess Weight x 0.60 = Expected Weight Loss
If you are looking for an easier way to determine your potential weight loss, you can use this calculator here. It is important to keep in mind that this number is merely a guideline and you may lose more or less weight depending on how well you adhere to your post-op guidelines and lifestyle changes.
