1. How Do I Get Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
The journey to gastric sleeve surgery is simple. Below are the steps to take to get gastric sleeve surgery.
The first step on your gastric sleeve journey is to see if you qualify for surgery. Use our helpful BMI Calculator to get started.
The next step is to book a free, no-commitment consultation with our surgeons. Your consultation is an important step because it allows your surgeon to determine what course of action should be taken to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle while also achieving your weight loss goals.

Once you are confirmed as a viable candidate for gastric sleeve surgery, and you feel comfortable and confident in the diagnosis from the doctors, your surgery date will be scheduled.
2. Getting Ready for Your Surgery
Successful weight loss starts with this comprehensive planning guide.
Prior to your surgery, we’ll have you complete the following items:
- Review and complete the provided consent forms.
- Fill out a patient health questionnaire.
- Have bloodwork and an ECG done at your local lab.
- Book a pre-operation virtual appointment with your anesthesiologist who will ask you more questions about your medical history and address any concerns you may have.
- Book a pre-operation virtual appointment with your dietitian. Long-term success depends on properly identifying the foods you are comfortable with, and the best course of action for your diet plan.
Make travel arrangements if you’re coming from out of town – check out our recommendations.
1-2 weeks before your surgery, we’ll have you do the following:
- Stop taking all herbal or natural supplements.
- Make an appointment with your primary care physician for one week after your surgery.
- Arrange to have a family member or friend stay with you for the first 48 hours after arriving home post-surgery.
- Stop taking any anti-inflammatory medications (e.g., Aspirin, Advil, or Ibuprofen) 10 days prior to your surgery.
- Begin your pre-operation diet.
- Purchase your post-surgery items using our post-surgery shopping list.
Here’s what to know for the day of your surgery:
- Bring along a bag with your personal items – check out our suggested day-of surgery packing list.
- Try to relax! Our skilled and experienced team is ready to support you as you undergo this life-changing surgery.
3. Your Pre- & Post-Operation Diet
Curious to know about your pre-op and post-op diet for gastric sleeve surgery? We’ve got you covered.
Before surgery, your dietitian will introduce you to a new diet plan, which should start two weeks prior to your surgery date. This is done to help shrink the size of your liver, which is important because the risks of surgery complications are increased with fatty liver disease (when fat cells accumulate around the inside of your liver).
For most patients with a BMI of >45, a liquid diet (such as Optifast) will be required for one to two weeks leading up to surgery.
