While the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) pays for many health services you may need and often covers Gastric Bypass, it will only cover Gastric Sleeve under specific circumstances.
To qualify for OHIP coverage of gastric bypass, you need a BMI over 40 or over 35 with existing obesity-related health conditions. However, to qualify for OHIP coverage of sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve), candidates need to have a BMI over 60 that would make the bypass too risky to perform.
