What is Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?
Gastric sleeve surgery is one of the world’s leading weight loss procedures. Discover how it’s performed, how it helps you lose weight, and how it benefits your overall health and life.
( Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy or VSG )
Gastric Sleeve Surgery removes a portion of the stomach to create a smaller, bananaโshaped sleeve. It reduces hunger and portion sizes while keeping food on a normal path (no intestinal rerouting).
Why some patients consider it:
- Powerful, wellโstudied weightโloss for many patients
- Simpler anatomyย and vitamin routine vs. bypass procedures
- Often a good firstโline surgical option
How Gastric Sleeve Surgery Helps You Lose Weight
The procedure works by removing a significant portion of your stomach โ with minimum effect on the digestive process. The now-reduced stomach area then resembles a sleeve, thus the name of the surgery.
BENEFITS
Reduce your food intake, reduce your cravings.
One completed, gastric sleeve surgery offers you two distinct benefits for weight loss:
The procedure works by removing a significant portion of your stomach โ with minimum effect on the digestive process. The now-reduced stomach area then resembles a sleeve, thus the name of the surgery.
Secondly, the surgery also limits the amount of food that you crave. This is because your stomach is reduced in size now, and you feel satisfied with smaller amounts of food. The science behind your food cravings has to do with a โhunger hormoneโ your stomach produces called ghrelin, which sends signals to your brain causing cravings and hunger. Gastric sleeve surgery actually removes the portion of the stomach that produces the most of this hunger hormone. This means youโll be satisfied with less food and will be able to wait longer between meals before you have the urge to eat again.
How Gastric Sleeve Surgery is Performed
A unique dual-surgeon approach in our state-of-the-art clinic.
Step One:
The patient is given general anesthesia to ensure they are asleep and pain-free during the procedure.
Step Two:
The surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope (a small camera) along with other surgical instruments through these incisions.
Step Three:
Next, our surgeons use the video feed to remove a portion of the stomach and staple the remainder of the stomach into a sleeve shape. To accomplish this with precision, we use a Smart Stapling system, which is a device that measures the thickness of the tissue and simultaneously separates, cuts, and staples with three lines of interlaced titanium staples. This creates a remarkably strong, leakproof hold. Plus, the titanium staples are MRI safe.
Step Four:
Finally, the excised portion of the stomach along with the camera and instruments are removed, and the incisions in the abdomen are sutured. The entire surgery takes about 1.5 hours to perform, and the recovery period is typically just a few hours. Most patients go home the same day.
